Beverage company Coca-Cola and NGO Reef Check Indonesia Foundation have launched two environmental campaigns aimed at educating people to play a more active role in preserving the environment.

The first campaign is the Bali Coastal Clean Up program and the second is the Let's Do the Right Thing campaign.

Edwin Pierolie, a communications consultant for Coca-Cola, on Thursday said the Bali Coastal Clean Up program started at Legian Beach on July 13 and last until December.

Indonesian celebrities, including musician Nugie, former Miss Indonesia Nadine Chandrawinata, actor Marcel Chandrawinata and surfer champion Tipi Jabrik, as well as hundreds of volunteers attended the program's launch.

Terry Davis, Coca-Cola Amatil group managing director, said in a press release that the program was part of the long-term "Coca-Cola for Bali" campaign consisting of a range of activities to support the province's people, culture and environment.

Reef Check Indonesia Foundation chairwoman Naneng Setiasih said that during the six-month program volunteers and local communities would conduct clean-up activities monthly on Sanur, Nusa Lembongan, Legian and Jimbaran Beaches.

"We will also focus on the Let's Do the Right Thing Campaign, building networks among non-governmental organizations and the local community," she said.

She said they chose the title Let's Do the Right Thing because everybody produced garbage and it was people's responsibility to recycle their own garbage.

"It can start with something simple, like taking garbage to a dump site or by bringing your own bag shopping, or something like that," she said.

She said they wanted to raise the awareness of the Balinese people on various things that could be done to save the environment.

To promote the campaign, the Coca-Cola for Bali team will also sell 12,500 wristbands designed by Surfer Girl for Rp 10,000 (US$1.10) each.

The wristbands can be purchased at Reef Check Indonesia Foundation's office in Jl. Tukad Balian 113, Renon, Denpasar, or at Surfer Girl's store on Jl. Legian, Kuta.

All profit from the wristband sales will be donated to support environmental activities in 2009.

Moreover, the campaign has also organized a movie competition under the theme: solutions to the garbage problem.

"Everyone can participate in the competition by sending their works to the website http://mycleanreef.org from August to November," she said, adding that duration of the movie was expected to be between 45 seconds and one minute.

The winner will be announced on the website in December.
