JAKARTA: The number of celebrities-turned-politicians may increase, as popular singer Tere has applied to be a member of the House of Representatives.

Tere -- born Theresia Ebenna Ezeria Pardede on Sept. 2, 1979 in Jakarta -- wants to run for a seat in the House in the next year's general election through the Democratic Party, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's political party.

"I'm not trying to follow other celebrities. I've actually been interested in politics for a while now, but the opportunity (to become involved) has only just come up," she was quoted as saying by okezone.com on Wednesday.

Tere, who has produced four albums, said she would not give up her singing career for politics.

"I'm still singing. I have a manager who will arrange my (music and politics) schedule," she said at the party's headquarters in Rawamangun, East Jakarta.

Rano Karno, Dede Yusuf, Adjie Massaid and Rieke Diah Pitaloka are among the celebrities who have made careers in politics. --JP
