State-run television says Nepal's governing assembly elected the new republic's first president
since it abolished the centuries-old monarchy in May.

Nepal Television says Constituent Assembly members elected Ram Baran Yadav of the Nepali Congress party as the president.

The television said an official announcement was expected to be made later in the evening by assembly chairman Kul Bahadur Gurung. Yadav received more than half the votes in the 594-seat
assembly that was required to win.(**)

Good luck to the newly acclaimed Republic of Nepal and its people. It is indeed heartening to note that the positive energy and years of struggle has finally gifted this country perched in the Himalayas with the freedom it richly deserves! One sincerely hopes that unlike some of the failed democracies in South Asia (with Pakistan being at the top of the list) Nepal is able to march on and ensure that there is continuity of process and justice for all.
