Police have arrested people for allegedly torching North Maluku gubernatorial candidate Abdul Gafur's house here at the weekend.

"We questioned 12 witnesses and four of them, identified by their initials as MY, AM, MS and SH, have been named suspects and are being detained at the Ternate police headquarter," North
Maluku Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Sih Harno said on Monday.

He said the number of suspects may increase as the investigation was still underway.

The arson has been linked to the North Maluku gubernatorial election dispute as the suspects are the supporters of Gafur's rival, Thaib Armayin.

Sih Harno said the police were still questioning six witnesses in connection with the burning of two houses owned by Muhajir Marsaoli, North Maluku Planning Development Board (Bappeda) chief, and Nurbaya, a local resident, at dawn Sunday.(**)
