Bogor's candidates start campaign

Five candidates and their running mates in the Bogor regency election offered their visions for office at the Bogor Council building Wednesday.

The five pairs running are: Iyus Djuher and Mohamad Rusdi AS, both Bogor regency councilors; Maman Daning and Muhammad Nurdin, head of Citeureup subdistrict; TB Soenmandjaja, a lecturer at Ibnu Khaldun University, and entrepreneur Ace Supeli; Fitri Putra Nugraha, a councilor and son of the incumbent regent Agus Utara Effendi, with Endang Kosasih, a member of the People's Consultative Assembly; and Rachmat Yasin, the speaker of the Bogor Council, with councilor Karyawan Fathurachman.

Iyus-Rusdi are backed by the Democratic Party (PD); Maman-Nurdin are independent candidates; Soenmandjaja-Ace have support from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS); Fitri-Endang were nominated by the Golkar Party; and Rachmat-Karyawan have backing from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the United Development Party (PPP).

The five pairs offered political platforms mostly focused on education, health care, poverty, agriculture, the environment and bureaucratic reform.

After delivering their messages at the council building, three of the candidate pairs toured the city.

Iyus-Rusdi and Maman-Nurdin did not join the tour.

"Their absence was probably due to lack of coordination with our office," head of the Bogor Election Commission Mohamad Aan Hanafiah said.

"It's unfortunate because it was a good opportunity for candidates to introduce themselves to their competitors," he added.

An official at the commission, Romli Eko Wahyudi, said the campaign period would last from Aug. 6 to 20, at which time the commission will hold a debate for the candidates on a private network, TVOne.

From Aug. 21 to 23 campaign activities will be suspended, with the election to take place on Aug. 24.
