DENPASAR: The Bali Health Foundation (Yakeba) took home the Red Ribbon Award from the 17th International AIDS Conference in Mexico for its humanitarian services towards rehabilitating injected drug users (IDUs).

"I am very proud to be a part of Yakeba, and I hope this organization can be the trigger for everyone to be more serious and more focused in eradicating HIV and AIDS in Bali," said Koplar, the steering committee chief of Yakeba.

Yakeba was singled out from 560 other HIV/AIDS related organizations that participated at the conference, in acknowledgment of its comprehensive drug users rehabilitation program, which includes encouraging patients to be active in human rights campaigns.

The percentage of syringe-sharing drug users among people with HIV/AIDS in Bali has increased from 45 percent in 2003 to 50 percent as of mid 2008. As of May 2008, the number of people known to have HIV/AIDS in Bali had reached 2,112, and 185 people have died as a result of HIV/AIDS-related infections. -- JP
