DENPASAR: Bali Governor Dewa Beratha donated Sunday a gamelan (traditional musical ensemble) orchestral set to the island's largest correctional facility, Kerobokan Penitentiary, as part of the country's celebrations to mark the 63rd anniversary of Independence Day.

"I hope the (gift) will be used by inmates as a medium to improve their artistic sense so that they will not feel they are being alienated from the outside world," Beratha said on the sidelines of a ceremony to commemorate Independence Day.

"I also hope that in time it will also encourage them to improve their behavior."

He said the musical instruments were given in response to a request by prison officials.

Kerobokan Warden Yon Suharyono praised the present, saying the gift would be a huge present for the inmates.

"We are now able to organize more musical activities thanks to the new set," he said. -- JP
