The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday questioned Riau Islands governor Ismeth Abdullah in relation to a forestry graft case.

Ismeth said that he was questioned as a witness in a forest conversion case in Bintan regency.

"I clarified the Bintan case," Ismeth said, as quoted by Antara news agency. He was referring to a bribery case over a permit issuance for a conservation forest conversion.

The KPK has named Bintan administration secretary Azirwan and lawmaker Al Amin Nur Nasution as suspects. Azirwan is currently defending his case at the Corruption Court.

Antara sources, however, said the governor was questioned about Dam Baloi forest conversion in the Batam free trade zone.

Dam Baloi, which was a water catchments forest, was converted into a commercial area in 2001 without any permit from the Forestry Ministry. A number of investors were reported to have paid annual fees to the local administration. (dre)
