Bali bombers execution likely to miss deadline

Redundant and unclear bureaucratic legal procedures may postpone the execution the three convicted Bali bombers, says Attorney General Hendarman Supandji.
The Attorney General on Wednesday told reporters that he has not received all the necessary paperwork for the execution, minimizing the chance of meeting the deadline to carry out the executions before the start of Ramadhan on Sept. 1.
"All formal requirements, including the response from the convicts as to whether they have requested clemency or not, are not yet in my hands," Hendarman said.
He explained that all necessary documents had to go through the district court, the district prosecutor's office and the provincial prosecutor's office before arriving at the Attorney
General's Office.
"I have no idea where or at what stage the paperwork is now."
When asked whether he could meet the Aug. 31 deadline, which he set, Hendarman said, "I can't say for sure anymore."
The three Bali bombers -- Amrozi, Ali Gufron and Imam Samudra -- earlier in June requested a judicial review of the law regulating the implementation of the death penalty on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.
The Constitutional Court has not handed down a verdict yet. (and)
