Teachers, students and parents can access, download and even print books through a new government website.

Currently, there are over 400 book titles on various subjects available on the website, http://bse.depdiknas.go.id, comprising of 95 titles for elementary schools, 72 titles for junior high schools, 24 for senior high schools and 216 for vocational schools.

The government has acquired the copyrights of those books from the writers and publishers, and it will continue to acquire the copyrights of more books next year.

During the launch of the website at the presidential palace, Minister of National Education Bambang Sudibyo called on local governments to help the education sector by downloading the books, printing them and providing them for free to the students in their area.

He said his ministry would also encourage publishers to print the books and sell the books cheaply.

"The Ministry of National Education bans teachers from selling books and requires students buy books directly from retailers," he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The minister said this program should help improve access to education as well as quality of education in the country. (rid)
