The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday demanded a 15-year imprisonment for state prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan, who has been charged with bribery and extortion.
Urip, who lead an Attorney General's Office (AGO) investigation into the Bank Indonesia liquidity support (BLBI) corruption case, allegedly accepted US$660,000 bribe from businesswoman Artalyta Suryani in relation to his probe into tycoon Sjamsul Nursalim earlier this year.
Sjamsul, who has a close relationship with Artalyta, managed to escape three questioning sessions of the investigation, which was dropped on February by the AGO due to a lack of evidence.
Last month, the Corruption Court sentenced Artalyta to five years in jail.
The KPK also accused Urip of extorting Rp 1 billion (US$110,000) from Glenn Yusuf, former chief of the now-defunct Indonesian Banking Restructuring Agency, who was also implicated in the BLBI case.
The KPK prosecutors also demanded Urip pay an Rp 250 million fine.Sarjono Turin, one of the prosecutors, said that Urip had tainted his institution and Indonesian law enforcement. (dre)
