JAKARTA: The Supreme Court has reportedly upheld a verdict by lower courts sentencing former State Logistics Agency (Bulog) head Widjanarko Puspoyo to 10 years in jail for corruption that cost the state Rp 79 billion.

The court also ordered the defendant to pay a Rp 500 million fine and US$1.6 million in restitution, its official Web site www.putusan.net reported Wednesday.

The court said the senior politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle would face an additional six months in prison if he failed to pay the fine, and another one-year jail term if he failed to pay the restitution.

The Supreme Court handed down the verdict on Aug. 13, 2008, dismissing his appeal.

The South Jakarta District Court had jailed Widjanarko on February 4 for 10 years for corruption in relation to the import of 22,000 head of Australian cattle in 2001, the export of 50,000 metric tons of rice to Africa in 2005 and the transfer of $12,000 to bank accounts belonging to him and his family.

The verdict was later upheld by the Jakarta High Court in June this year. --JP
