Gude, a legalized prostitution area in Madiun,
Titik S., a program manager at a foundation focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention called Bambu Nusantara, said that a total of 11,000 condoms sold in Gude in the last two months, "a considerable boost from 5,000 condoms sold in previous months." (sic)
“This is a quite significant progress. The people and the residents have understood the risks, sexual diseases numbers would surely decline,” said Titik, as quoted by Kompas.com on Sunday.
According to her, condom use campaign has been enforced since June 1 to overcome the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Previously, the foundation had found that around 80 percent of a total of 125 Gude residents suffered STDs. The number has decreased about 20 percent after the condom use program was launched. (dre)
