Flood blocks trans-Kalimantan highway

Floodwater has blocked the southern trans-Kalimantan highway at Kilometer 110 in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, since Monday night.

"The water flooded a 300-meter section of the road up to a meter deep in Asam Baru region," said Ridwan Manurung, an official of the local Public Works Agency, as quoted by Antara news agency Tuesday.

Ridwan said rain had been pouring heavily over the last few days, inundating the region's lowland.

The road block caused a 1.5-kilometer traffic queue between Sampit and Pangkalan Bun. Ridwan said the queue was getting longer because the flood had not receded.

He said this year's flood was worse than previous ones, which only inundated a small section of the road and stayed for a few hours.

Land conversions and bad sewerage, he said, were the major causes of the incident. (dre)
