I would like to respond to your editorial, "The invasion of Georgia" (Aug. 14), which ostracizes Russia for it's invasion of Georgia in its support of the South Ossetian minority.
Before condemning Russia, we should first examine the facts that led to this tragedy, and that really begins with the Western-catalyzed destruction of Yugoslavia.
It was for the same "concern" for minorities in Yugoslavia that the West, led by NATO, intervened in the their civil war, choosing sides and viciously bombing the Serbs, with the ultimate objective of cleansing them from their ancestral territories in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.
Kosovo was then stolen from Serbia and, out of 198 nations, about 40 (mostly Western) nations have recognized its illegal independence.
Georgia's premeditated attack on South Ossetia was conducted in a spirit similar to that of Croatia's "Operation Storm" when Croatian forces, trained and aided by U.S. retired generals, defeated the Croatian Serbs and initiated the largest ethnic cleansing in Europe since WWII.
The Georgians were trained and equipped by U.S. forces to slaughter South Ossetians just as the Croatians did in 1995 with the same objective: "Peace". The ultimate goal of such an effort is to deny Russia any ability to control oil pipelines in the Caucasus region and to ultimately provoke the internal dissolution of Russia, the world's largest country (by area).
Russia also has many natural resources wanted desperately by the West; Russia saw the writing on the wall and, given that Western leaders set the precedent for "might makes right" in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, did the same.
Though any war is by nature inhumane with inevitable atrocities committed by all participants, those who criticize Russia's involvement in Georgia must first criticize NATO and learn more about the truth of what Western leaders did to provoke Russia (outside of the Western media's wholly biased and distorted presentation of the conflict) lest WWIII begin in earnest.

Pravica, let me guess, you're originally Serbian. Because I have not heard so much bias spewed from one letter since Fox News' coverage of the Iraq "war". The Serbs were not as innocent as you portrayed them to be.
But let's assume you are right for argument's sake and that the "Western" world has led a campaign against the poor poor Serbian militia on the rampage against Croats and Bosnians. Let me ask this simple question, WHY? What is the motive for the whole "Western" world to be anti Serb? You can not use race or geography here, racially they are all slavs and geographically they are all in the same place more or less. And you can not use religion, because there is no conspiracy against the Greek Orthodox Church.
The whole world stopped the insanity in Yugoslavia (and rightly so) to end the carnage against the Bosnians perpetrated by the so very innocent Serbian forces. And I am glad they did.
