Bombers delayed execution deplored

DENPASAR: Agus Bambang Priyanto, Indonesia's civil representative to the UN for its Symposium on Supporting Victims of Terrorism, on Monday said he was disappointed with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) decision to delay the Bali bombers' execution.

Agus was one of the first people to enter the 2002 Bali bombing site, commanding the rescue and clean up efforts. He was been awarded the 2003 Asian Hero award by TIME Magazine in Japan for his deeds.

He said the AGO must execute the Bali bombers -- Amrozy, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron -- immediately to bring peace to the victims and families of the deadly bombings, which took the lives of 202 people, 164 of whom were foreign nationals.

"The government must swiftly uphold the law. If this delay keeps on going, the world will assume that law enforcement in Indonesia is weak," Agus told a press conference on his departure as Indonesia's representative to the UN.

He said in his visit to the UN office in New York, he would not bring up the matter of the execution and would talk about his rescue efforts after the bombing.

The symposium is held in conjunction with the commemoration of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack that destroyed the World Trade Center twin towers in 2001. . -- JP
