JAYAPURA: Nduga acting regent Hans Maniagasi said his administration needed Rp 6.2 billion (US$673,900) to fund the mapping of development zones so that future development would not damage the environment, especially Lorentz National Park.
"I will start my planning with zonal mapping to make a better development strategy and avoid environmental damage in the future," Hans told journalists Monday.
The national park was established in 1997 by Forestry Ministry decree. In 1999 it was named a natural World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee.
The park contains many of the flora and fauna native to Papua. It is home to 12,000 out of 20,000 species of flowers, 118 out of 164 species of mammals, 403 out of 650 species of birds and 48 species of reptiles as well as amphibians.
About 90 percent of Nduga regency area is parkland.-- JP
