Police seize 32,405 bottles of alcohol

JAKARTA: The city police netted more than 200 people and 32,405 bottles containing alcoholic beverages during a month-long vice operation from Aug. 1 to Aug. 28.

The operation, called Kilat Jaya, especially targeted offenders selling alcohol and drugs, soliciting, selling pornography and committing petty thievery.

"We planned the operation to prepare for Ramadan," said police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ketut Untung Yoga Ana in a recent statement.

During the operation police also arrested 23 alleged prostitutes and seized nine gambling machines, 1,050 pornographic DVDs and VCDs, 475 packages of fireworks and more than Rp 27 million (US$3,000) in cash.

The operation was carried out at various locations across the capital to help Muslims fulfill their religious obligations, the police said. -- JP
