JAKARTA: The Jakarta Statistics Agency announced plans to conduct a month-long survey on people living below the poverty line to update 2005 data, which was old and incomplete.

Djamal, the agency's head, said they would deploy 700 officials to 267 subdistricts across the city to gather data on low-income households.

"Each subdistrict will be visited by at least two officials, with subdistricts in North Jakarta deploying more officials because of its high poverty rate," he said.

Of 160,000 poor households identified in the 2005 data, around 56,000 were in North Jakarta.

Djamal said, besides surveying people with Jakarta identity cards, the surveyors would also include those without Jakarta ID cards. He said the agency only conducted the survey, then the central government would decide how to use the data.

He was optimistic the survey would only take a month as not all of Jakarta's subdistricts had low-income households. He expected to collect all data by December.

"The survey data, which will be used for the government's poverty eradication program, will replace the 2005 data. It will feature a complete inventory of cash aid recipients, including names, addresses and occupations," he said. -- JP
