Malaysian music industry wants Indonesian songs restricted
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Wed, 09/03/2008 6:29 PM | Life
The association of Malaysian music industry employees, Karyawan, has demanded the local authority limit the number of Indonesian songs on radio broadcasts, Antara news agency reported Wednesday.
Karyawan head Ahmad Abdullah said the association planned to propose to the Malaysian Minister of Energy, Water and Communications Minister, Shaziman Abu Mansor, a broadcasting ratio of 90 percent Malaysian songs and 10 percent Indonesian.
"The association will accept an 80:20 ratio," said Ahmad, who added that the association was supported by several Malaysian artists and was planning to meet with the minister on Thursday.
The association said Malaysian radio stations play too many Indonesian songs, hurting the Malaysian music industry by increasing sales for Indonesian music.
The radio producers, however, argue they are only following market demand.
The three top Malaysian radio stations -- Era FM, Hot FM and Suria FM -- air their own Indonesian music charts every Sunday morning.
Malaysian rock star Amy Search said radio stations would turn Malaysia into Jakarta every night by playing Indonesian songs until dawn.
Catering to market demands, many Malaysian telecommunications companies sponsor Indonesian band concerts in the country. (dre)

im and indonesia.... and i am very proud of it..
i hear malaysian songs,, to be quite honest some of them are quite good, infact one thing is that the lirik is much more romantic or u malaysia people might say 'jiwang',, all u need is a little boost up in the music industry demand..proabably the reason why radio stations in indonesia dont promote your songs is because there not exactly in demand..hahaha.. it might seem like a blow, but this indeed is the truth..
dont get me wrong,, take this as a compliment,, your nasyids are much more better compared to Indonesia... but other than that i have to go my countries side with the rest of the music media....
try to be creative, more hip...
peace all...

Malaysia..please dont you ever think about musics...just enjoy!!
Your musics is suck, never developed........
You must realize, Indonesian musics is far better than yours!!
Banning is not the solution but trying to improve quality of your musics is logic just like Indonesia keeps trying to be equal to the American musics.
You're 50 years left behind in international music trend instead!!
Tell you musicians to go to music schools!!! Even street musicians in Indonesia can produce better quality musics compared to what educated musicians you have can do!!
be gentleman!!!

this is simply demand creates supply. Same thing goes to the demand of Indonesian workers.
But anyway, another signs of Malaysian inferiority complex... Isn't that ironic, mocking and harassing Indonesian workers in any chance they got, but at the same time enjoying Indonesian music every night in their bedrooms, in their cars, or silently using iPods...
Get real my brother!

Malaysia's fave choice is either banning Indonesian songs
or stealing then claiming them as Malaysia's
whata looser, man! Go to music school.

this stupid moves is not malaysia' monopoly. in fact, indonesians do this too (at least indonesians do this more blatantly). more than 200 years ago, the legendary adam smith has written in his magnum opus "the wealth of nations" that each country has its own specialization. to better off, each country must trade with other countries.
clearly any import ban hurts common people. in this case, if the indonesian music airing ban in malaysia were approved, then common malaysian would be hurt because they can no longer enjoy high quality music. this move would only benefit malaysian music producers, at the cost of common malaysians.
the same logic applies to indonesia. we (too often) reject foreign investors from investing in indonesia (and we are proud of it). notice the same logic! we choose to benefit few indonesians companies, at the expense of common indonesians life.

Wonder if there is any political motive behind this sudden, unprecedented development... just wondering..or maybe that some people just can't bear the thought that they are being beaten by the "Indon" whom they so happily bashed at any given opportunity.
Either way, socially, it is rather typical that the those who feel threatened would rather lay blame on the outside rather than seek solution from within.
