Malaysian music industry wants Indonesian songs restricted

The association of Malaysian music industry employees, Karyawan, has demanded the local authority limit the number of Indonesian songs on radio broadcasts, Antara news agency reported Wednesday.

Karyawan head Ahmad Abdullah said the association planned to propose to the Malaysian Minister of Energy, Water and Communications Minister, Shaziman Abu Mansor, a broadcasting ratio of 90 percent Malaysian songs and 10 percent Indonesian.

"The association will accept an 80:20 ratio," said Ahmad, who added that the association was supported by several Malaysian artists and was planning to meet with the minister on Thursday.

The association said Malaysian radio stations play too many Indonesian songs, hurting the Malaysian music industry by increasing sales for Indonesian music.

The radio producers, however, argue they are only following market demand.
The three top Malaysian radio stations -- Era FM, Hot FM and Suria FM -- air their own Indonesian music charts every Sunday morning.

Malaysian rock star Amy Search said radio stations would turn Malaysia into Jakarta every night by playing Indonesian songs until dawn.

Catering to market demands, many Malaysian telecommunications companies sponsor Indonesian band concerts in the country. (dre)

Why not organize a referendum with your listeners? Then you KNOW what your consumers really want! Good luck!

(just googled "indonesia plus news" that I found this article while listening to Indonesian music! Isn't that karma? Plus I lived in Medan when I was a little kid! So I felt a little bit responsible to help in this brainstorm and to write this comment as consumer and as friend!)

finally! a good news to make me a proud indonesian!

If you want to restrict Indonesian song, never put P. Ramli aka Ramli Puteh who came originally from West Aceh (Indonesia) as your legend. Datok Ahmad Abdullah why not you ask your artists in this era more creative like their senior Lefthanded, Search, Sheila Majid, Fairuz, Siti Nurhalisa, Too Phat, Zainal Abidin, etc who can competed with Indonesian artists in 90's.

well i think the malaysian music more into old style, from what i see is that the Indonesian music become more up and creatively, and with the bahasa is more nicer to listen.I think Malaysian can make some music with the bahasa song, like Siti Nurhaliza, so that people in Indonesia can listen to. I've been two years living in Malaysia until now and i heard some of the music, like indie rock and bands, some of them is really nice to hear.
If they want to make the Malaysian music become better it's a good idea and they should concern with the small bands which have a good quality like "meet uncle hussain" and the other single singer that have a good quality. And they should improve how they make the video clip, sometimes i think they are too much and at the end it doesn't match with the song. i think Malaysian music have to improve more to make their people really like their own music.peace!!:)

great!go go Indonesia

Loooser...

You can't restrict people taste of music, this is ridiculous and authoritarian. People will listen to what their ears like to hear, which in this case Indonesian songs instead of Malaysian songs.

As a Brit working in Indonesia one of the first things that impressed me was the quality of Indonesian popular music. I can't think of a Malaysian act that even comes near Peter Pan or Radja. Perhaps the difference is that in Indonesia artists are mostly free from state interference whereas in Malaysia they have to be very careful what they sing about.

Why don't Malaysian musicians be more creative? Do you remember that Amy Search used to sell his music to Indonesians?

Now he's old and bitter.....so sad.

I'd like to make it clear that mentioned step is not a way of competing by the goverment. The government of Msia doesnt hav any say what so ever in this thing, the only problem is those Malaysians who cant produce good songs and cant compete with your songs from Indonesia.

Hereby I'd like everyone to know that Malaysians music lovers are not supporting this restriction.we love Indonesian musics due to the bad quality of majority of our artists. It's not a nationalism war or anything,it isnt political, just some losers from the Music Body who cant produce good music as yours...
