Malnourished baby dies at hospital

JAKARTA: Adrian, a seven-month-old boy, died of malnutrition in North Jakarta on Monday after being treated at a hospital for a month.

His foster father, Saleh, 40, said the boy had struggled for air in his last moments, beritajakarta.com reported.

An officer of Koja Hospital said the boy had suffered complications, including a lung problem, low immunity and a tongue infection.

He was stick-thin and his scalp had wounds that looked like holes, the web site reported.

Last month, the boy's condition caused an uproar in the media after he was found clinging to his dead mother in their rented room in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

The mother was thought to have died. Adrian was then taken to hospital and adopted by a neighbor.

Nur Abadi, director of the hospital, said the mother had been poor when the child was born. -- JP
