SEMARANG: Semarang public order officers seized 200 kilograms of glonggongan meat (meat injected with water) during a raid at Johar and Wonodri traditional markets early Monday.

"We were observing them since midnight, but we were only able to catch them in action in the early morning," said Semarang public order officer Sumardjo.

The Semarang authority has started conducting regular market raids as Ramadan begins, in a bid to stop irresponsible merchandisers who attempt to increase their profits illegally.

Sumardjo said selling glonggongan meat violated the regency regulation on veterinary and animal health, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment or a fine of Rp 5 million. --JP
