SURABAYA: Due to the prolonged internal rift in the National Awakening Party (PKB), the East Java General Election Commission (KPUD) has yet to decide which camp of the two conflicting sides to recognize as official.

Although the General Election (KPU) has decided to recognize Muhaimin Iskandar's camp, the East Java KPUD has been reluctant to accept its proposed legislative candidates due to increasing protests by former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid's camp.

Muhaimin's camp has proposed 111 legislative candidates for the House of Representatives, the provincial legislature and the regency and municipal legislatures, while that of Gus Dur has proposed 78 legislative candidates.

A KPUD staff who asked for anonymity said the provincial election commission has not yet decided which camp would be accepted to nominate legistlative candidates.

Arief Budiman, a KPUD member, said his side was still waiting for guidance from the KPU regarding which one of the two camps would be recognized.

He added KPUD had, so far, verified the two camps' legislative candidates for the provincial and regency legislatures. --JP
