JAKARTA: It seems that ATM fraud is growing more sophisticated. TV-soap artist Zaskia Mecca fell victim to such fraud recently, losing more than Rp 27 million (US$3,000) from her bank account, her manager, Lavinia, was quoted as saying by detikhot.com on Tuesday.

The theft occurred on Aug. 19 after Mecca made a non-cash transaction at a BCA (Bank Central Asia) ATM in Jatiasih, Bekasi, at around 7 p.m. She was able to withdraw her card from the machine but a few hours later she found out that her PIN number had been changed.

She then called the bank's customer service department only to be informed that somebody had transferred Rp 24.5 million and then Rp 2.7 million to a bank account in Surabaya.

"Zaskia was shocked at the time and wanted to cry," Lavinia said, adding that the artist of popular flick Ayat-ayat Cinta (Love Verses) had reported the case to the police.

"The police said she was not the first victim of ATM fraud in Jatiasih. She was perhaps the sixth or eighth victim," she said.

Besides reporting to the police, Lavinia said Zaskia also demanded the bank settle her case because she felt she had not done anything wrong and that the bank was responsible for her loss. -- JP
