MATARAM, W. Nusa Tenggara: Residents arrested a man, later found to be a police officer, for robbery on Jl. Sriwijaya in Mataram.
The man, identified as Sec. Brig. Herwin Retnadi, 27, had on Tuesday attempted to steal a gold necklace belonging to Rudiyani, a resident of Ampenan, West Nusa Tenggara.
Rudiyani was riding a motorcycle with her husband, Safwan, when Herwin (also on a motorcycle) passed behind them and grabbed the necklace from her.
The victim shouted for help as Herwin tried to escape, falling from his motorcycle near the crime scene.
Residents and the victim chased and arrested the man and then handed him to the police.
"The suspect is now being detained at Mataram police station for further investigation," West Nusa Tenggara Police spokesman Comr. Tribudi Pangastuti said Wednesday.
Tribudi said Herwin, a member of East Lombok Police, had left his job four months ago and was on a fugitive list for desertion.--JP
