Crane worker dies from 90-meter fall

BANDUNG, W. Java: A worker died Wednesday after falling from a height of 90 meters when a platform sling broke at Majesty Apartment construction site on Jl. Surya Sumantri.

The victim, Hasan Bakar, 28, and two other workers were in a platform, painting the building at about 9:15 a.m. when the crane sling broke and the platform suddenly inclined 45 degrees.

Hasan fell and died instantly with injuries to his head, while his two coworkers were able to survive by hanging on to the platform for about 10 minutes before being rescued by workers using a lift.

Hasan's body was taken to Hasan Sadikin general hospital for a post mortem examination. Police questioned the victim's friends at the scene of the accident.

Majesty Hotel and Apartment public relations manager Ossie Himawan said the contractor of the project, PT Dwi Prakarsa Tamajaya, should be fully responsible for death.

"We signed a contract with the contractor. So, the responsibility should be in the hands of the contractor. We will help return the body to his hometown," Ossie said. --JP
