More than 100 houses and a hotel at the heavily congested area in Petisah Hulu, Medan, caught on fire Thursday night, forcing around 270 families to evacuate their houses for safety.
Witnesses suspect the fire, which started at about 3:30 p.m., was allegedly caused by somebody playing with firecrackers. In Indonesia, firecrackers are traditionally associated with the holy month of Ramadan.
The fire spread rapidly through the houses, most of which are built out of plywood, helped by a strong wind, witnesses said as quoted by Kompas.com.
Eight people were badly injured during the incident.(and)
