An article by Totok Amien Soefijanto titled "Technology in our Classroom", (The Jakarta Post, Aug. 30, p. 6) makes a very good point. It's the right time to integrate technology with teaching in the classroom.
First, technology is becoming more and more affordable. Perhaps it's still expensive due to Indonesia's economic conditions but, compared with a year ago, the cost for implementing technology is getting obviously cheaper. We could keep waiting but then it will be too late.
Second, teaching with technology is more efficient. For example, lecturers no longer need to use transparencies and a projector to present materials in class, instead they use a notebook PC and software like PowerPoint and Word.
Materials can be updated anytime and photocopy machines to copy transparencies are no longer needed. Besides, presentations that use software are definitely more interesting.
Graphics, colors, charts and pictures are easily included. I hope our government will realize the importance of using technology in the classroom and find ways to implement it soon.
Soefijanto has give his valuable input. Meanwhile, private schools and universities should start implementing technology in their institutions first. Since they're commercial, they should have the budget.
