JAKARTA: Four hundred and fifty overseas students are taking part in the 2008/2009 Darmasiswa scholarship program organized by the Indonesian government.
The students will study Indonesia's diverse cultures and languages in 44 local universities for either six months or a year.
"The Darmasiswa program is a part of the National Education Ministry's commitments to strengthen our friendships with other countries. I'm sure this program will provide great opportunities to participants to exchange experiences and understand one another," National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo said Wednesday as he opened the program.
The Darmasiswa program began in 1974, with the number of alumni standing at 2,037 from 85 countries.
This academic year, Thailand sent 42 students, China 41, European countries 70 and Hungary 30. A number of students from Australia, Timor Leste, the United States and Spain are also among the participants. -- JP
