JAKARTA: The South Jakarta police will raid firecracker vendors across their jurisdiction during the month of Ramadan.

Operation division head for the South Jakarta Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Elbin Darwin said Wednesday the southern portion of Jakarta was a popular spot for the vendors, who mostly come from outside the capital.

"We seized sacks containing firecrackers in Pamulang and Kebayoran Lama at the beginning of the fasting month," Elbin said.

New bylaws will fortify the existing ban on fireworks as well as sanctions for offenders, he added.

Firecrackers are banned in Indonesia as potential sources of social disturbance and physical harm.

Raids on firecracker vendors are usually more intense during the fasting month, with residents, mostly teenagers, igniting fireworks while awaiting dusk, when the fast-breaking begins. -- JP
