JAKARTA: A pedestrian bridge over the Ciliwung River in Central Jakarta has broken into three pieces, collapsing into the river. Nevertheless, the bridge is still used by many.
The 1.5-meter-wide and 20-meter-long bridge connecting two subdistricts -- Kwitang and Kebon Sirih -- broke last Saturday evening, beritajakarta.com reported.
Although it fell into the garbage-strewn river, the three pieces remained connected. Nobody was injured in the collapse.
Muklis, the Kwitang subdistrict head, said the concrete bridge was built in 1976 and had not been renovated since.
Residents prefer to continue using the fallen bridge rather than another located 40 meters away, despite the danger involved.
"Locals very much need the bridge," a resident, Nur, said. -- JP

Resident Nur said that locals need the bridge. It appears to me that they need "a" bridge, not necessarily the broken bridge, as there is another one right next to it. It more looks like the people underestimate the danger or that they are just to lazy to make a short detour.
