DENPASAR: Despite the large number of wild dogs in the Bali capital of Denpasar, the city has declared them free of rabies, a disease spread by dog bites, an official said Thursday.
Denpasar Livestock Office head Dewa Ngurah urged visitors to Bali not to be afraid of stray dogs which were commonly seen on roads, residential areas and beaches.
Ngurah said his office had assigned a team to manage rabies prevention. The team, whose members include representatives of various related institutions and the police, will distribute information to dog owners on rabies and how to treat it.
The dog owners will be advised to let members of the team check the health of their pets before dogs can be certified rabies-free, he said.
Ngurah explained that the number of registered dogs in the city had reached almost 5,000.
No rabies infections were reported over the last few years although several people had been rushed to hospitals after being bitten by dogs, Ngurah said. -- JP
