JAKARTA: Police, soldiers and ulema arrested 24 alleged prostitutes on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, Jl. Lokasari and Jl. Kali Besar in Taman Sari, West Jakarta, during a raid Wednesday night.
Most of the suspects tried to run from police, including a transvestite on Jl. Kali Besar, who plunged into a river to avoid capture.
Taman Sari district head Gustam Effendi said the sex workers would be sent to Kedoya social institution in West Jakarta.
The raid was intended to promote peace during the fasting month, he added. Ramadan commenced Sept. 1 this year. -JP

An occupation as old as mindkind, and we have hopes to eradicate it? It is present EVERYWHERE. Better, legalize it under license, just like the dutch have, keep the mentally ill and organised criminals out the game.

Most prostitutes just try to make a living. Many have children or younger brothers and sisters in need of support. If law enforcers and priests are serious about stopping prostitution, I suggest that they start a social support agency, where prostitutes can receive financial support in exchange for some other service than prostitution. Just running about arresting prostitutes and only in one particular month is a very hypocritical and ridiculous attitude.

Is prostitution worse than marrying a 6 years old girl and consummating her at 9 years old??

The solution to this 'ill' is simple enough: at birth, all male Indonesian babies are castrated ... that way, prostitution will become extinct within a few decades.

I think the prostitution is the social disease like gambling and drugs. So it's our responsibility to solve the problem with government and ulema.
Therefor, prevention is the best way to do not only in Ramadan month but also in every month. But if this way can't be done, the raid is the last solution.

The prostitution practices is a social problem that never ends in our country. We generally, through newspapers, knows that prostitutes practice their each profession with various reasons. They do it because parts of them have mental and spiritual ill and others cause of living in poverty. Who could be blamed on this happen? Psychologically, they have trouble to control and actualize themselves in propositional so that they choose kind of job that would exactly be making worse their own problem. Spiritually, they have also problem to bring their pschological trouble into the positive ways, especially religious routes. I think this prostitution case is not different from the mentall ill case. Government should support psychiatrists, together with ulamas, to help the sex workers returning to the religious route. This is based on what I watched on a television programs last night. I watched one of television programs that described how ulamas of Pesantren Al Bajigur in Sumenep have recovered many mental ill people. I am proud of what the ulamas have done. They have still good spirit to help mental ill people even though their efforts have not financially been supported by local government. It seems that they sincerely do it in the name of Allah.

Man, round up prostitutes is man law which is created by majority ruler. It is just about interpretation how people see prostitute. Why do you have to round them up on specific month why not every month or why don't they catch all the prostitute in the world if it is mission from god. How do you justify prostitute in your religion it is just matter of interpretation. So, let them be. They need to do what the need to do unless if you can help them out of their situation. Corruption is more dangerous in Indonesia and the corrupter walk free and they claim themselves faithful to their god. Almost everyone corrupt in Indonesia weather is small or big. why don't they give their money to prostitutes and hoping God will forgive them.

What about the men who acted in adultery?
Only women are evil?
What about all the other sinners who are NOT rounded up?
What injustice?
What about the Muslims who mistreat the poor?

Is it only because its Ramadhan that`s why these "prostitute" are arrested. So it means after the Ramadhan they are back to buisiness. What a shame.

Ardi, you must be hiding behind the good teaching of your religion.
Ramadhan is about self reflection and restraint. You've tarnished the good teaching of Islam.
