JAKARTA: Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Syihab, charged with inciting violence during last June's Monas attack, refuted the testimony of Natsir Ahmad from the National Alliance for the Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKKBB).

Natsir's testimony was given at trial Thursday in the Central Jakarta district courthouse.

"I refute the testimony given by the witness today because it is irrelevant," Rizieq said after listening to Natsir, who is also a member of the Muslim sect Ahmadiyah, as reported by the kompas.com.

Natsir was summoned by the district attorney to testify concerning the incident, in which 70 AKKBB activists were injured.

According to Rizieq's legal team, led by Ari Yusuf Amir, the witness falsified his statements. "His testimony before the presiding judges is different from what was given during his deposition," one of Rizieq's lawyers said.

Differences in the testimony concern the location where members of the Islamiyah sect gathered during the rally, the location from which they exited the park, and the size of the crowd at the rally.

Rizieq was charged with violating criminal code articles 170, for ambush, and 156, for inciting hostility, during the Monas attack. -JP
