The Justice and Human Rights Ministry has denied a prison transfer request by convicted Australian drug smuggler, Schapelle Leigh Corby.
The ministry said Corby had only served four years of the 20 year sentence.
"She'd probably have had her request granted if she had been in prison for 15 years," said Muhammad Indra, head of the ministry's office in Bali, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com on Sunday.
Corby requested to be transferred from Kerobokan Penitentiary in Denpasar, to Bangli Penitentiary -- in the same city, but closer to the Australian Consulate General, citing mental health reasons.
Corby's lawyer Erwin Siregar said his client was depressed after the Supreme Court had rejected her final appeal in March. Corby was treated at Sanglah General Hospital for depression in July.
She was arrested in October 2004 upon arrival in Bali from Australia, and has been serving time ever since in Kerobokan Prison, the largest correctional facility on the island.
Corby was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison by Denpasar District Court, for smuggling 4.2 kilograms of marijuana into Bali in May 2005. (dre)

The girl is guilty. If you do the crime, be prepared to do the time.

Corby would be treated much better if she had been one of the Bali bombers. At the very least, she'd get to go out to Starbucks for coffee with Brigadier-General Gorries Mere.

Yeah, requesting a transfer to another penitentiary.. and then what, requesting another transfer back home? Do you really think we're that stupid??? This has nothing to do with the government being insensitive to her "condition". She was found guilty and fell into depression because of her own act. If you dont want to get caught then don't do crimes. Better yet, if you don't want to deal with a country's law, just don't go there.

If Corby's imprisonment has caused her to become clinically mentally depressed after 4 years in Bali's most notoriously overcrowded jail, then condemning her to another 11 years there before she can be transferred amounts to torture. Yes, torture. She is only asking to be moved to Bangli prison, 20Km away from Kerobokan, which is closer to Bali's major mental health clinic where she can seek treatment, and by coincidence be closer to the Australian Consulate. How can the authorities be so insensitive to such a justified mental health case during the holy month of Ramadan? Why torture her for 11 more years at Kerobokan when it would be so simple to transfer her to the healthier climate of Bangli? I am "bingun" and do not understand how or why the authorities can be so cruel.
