The East Java town of Malang sees 10 new HIV/AIDS infections every month, half of which are male aged between 20 and 39.
“Many of those infected with HIV/AIDS are within the productive age range,” Chairwoman of the Regional AIDS Prevention Commission Sutiarsih said Monday.
The further revealed that the total number of residents with HIV/AIDS till March 2008 is 673, a 115 increase from the previous year.
Sutiarsih said intravenous drug users contributed 83.53 percent of the total number of infections. Sex workers, transvestites, drug convicts and housewives form the remaining 2.9 percent, 0.97 percent, 10.2 percent and 2.4 percent of the cases, respectively.
She added that the commission has recently launched an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign among housewives.
“We have already begun reaching out to female members of the family welfare movement (PKK),” she said. (amr)
