The government will provide full sponsorship of the Asian Beach Games in Bali this October, a minister said Monday.
"The government will fully assist in terms of finances and event- organization," Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said, as quoted by Antara.
"The President has instructed all coordinating ministries as well as the governor and regents of Bali to support the sporting initiative," he added.
According to Bakrie, culture and entertainment will be among the highlights of the world's first beach sporting event.
Over 4,000 athletes from 45 countries will participate at the event, which is scheduled to run from Oct. 18 to 25 and will be held at 14 different locations in Bali.
"A number of heads of states and governments have also expressed their interest in attending. The government will ensure appropriate security measures and protocol are taken," Bakrie said.
It was previously reported that the organizing committee of the Asian Beach Games I were Rp 175 billion (US$18.8 million) short in funds.
The event is said to be costing Rp 300 billion. (amr)

It's good to hear that the government is supporting the first Beach Volley Ball tournament in Bali. I hope that the event is run prefessionally and that the competitors and supporters are treated respectfully.
One thing that both the provincial as well as the central governments together with the security agencies must ensure that the event is safe and that none of the visitors is cheated and harrassed.
The world will keep a close eye on the event mindful of what happend back in 2001 when terrorists killed more than 200 innocent tourists and locals.
