JAKARTA: South Sumatra Governor Syahrial Oesman was questioned Monday by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in connection with alleged bribery involving a plan to develop a protected forest area in the province.

"I was questioned as a witness," Syahrial told reporters after the interrogation.

The KPK summoned Syahrial as part of its investigation into alleged corruption surrounding a protected forest area in Banyuasin regency.

Syahril is currently awaiting the results of the South Sumatra gubernatorial election held Sept. 4, in which he hopes to be elected to serve a second five-year term.

The case implicated former chief of the House of Representatives Commission IV on forestry Yusuf Emir Faisal.

Apart from Yusuf, the KPK believes other members of the commission received a total Rp 2.5 billion (US$268,716) to approve the development of Tanjung Pantai Air Telang in Banyuasin.

The Banyuasin administration had planned to develop a Tanjung Api-api seaport in the area. --JP
