Jakarta: The city administration has budgeted Rp 1 billion (US$105,000) to build a fence around the newly emptied BMW park in North Jakarta.
The city administration's public relations head, Purba Hutapea, said the fence was to prevent evicted squatters from returning to the 26.5-hectare Bersih, Manusiawi dan Berwibawa (Clean, humane and esteemed) park.
The squatters were evicted on Aug. 24 without relocation support from the administration.
The semipermanent, 900-meter-long fence will be erected in October and is currently going through the tendering process, said public facility administrative affairs division head, Heru Budi Hartono, as reported by Beritajakarta.com.
The city has said it plans to use the park as a dumping site for river sediment to be dredged from 13 rivers in Jakarta, before becoming a dedicated site for an international stadium. --JP
