KPK warns officials against taking gifts

JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) renewed its call Thursday for state officials to avoid receiving any gifts related to their power and positions, as these could be considered bribes.

The commission defined any gift or gratification as anything such as money, discounts, travel packages, medication or other facilities given to state officials in connection with their positions.

The KPK made the request ahead of next month's Idul Fitri celebrations, which traditionally see people giving parcels to clients, relatives, friends and officials.

In a press release, the KPK suggested it would be better if such gifts were donated to the needy.

Officials who have already received any gifts are being advised to report to the KPK within 30 days of accepting them.

The KPK also reminded people to stop placing congratulatory messages for state officials through advertisements in print and electronic media. --JP
