Dozens of cars, possibly more than a hundred, with Timor Leste license plates have been operated without appropriate permits around Atambua, East Nusa Tenggara, local police have said.
Belu subprecinct police chief Adj. Comr. Sugeng Kurniaji said owners of the cars had legally imported them, but failed to renew licenses after their 14-day entry permit expired.
"On august, 56 cars entered Indonesia, but as their permit ran out, the owners never brought them back to their country," Sugeng said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
One of the foreign-owned cars was even being used by a local government official, Sugeng added.
"I have the record to prove it," he said.
Most of the cars entered Indonesia through the main gate at Mota Ain, with most owners looking to fix them at workshops in Atambua, he added.
"Many of the cars stay here, exceeding the 14-day permit. If the owners are caught, they could be indicted for violating immigration laws," Sungung said.
Lack of coordination between related government departments and unclear territorial delineations between Indonesia and Timor Leste were among the reasons behind such immigration violations, he added.(and)
