Broken water pipe puts Bandung in crisis

A water pipe for Bandung tap water operator company PDAM broke in Jln. Raya Banjaran Kampung in Baleendah late Saturday night, affecting water distribution to about 30,000 customers.

PDAM spokesperson Meliana S. said the aged pipe may have given way.

The pipe, 6 meters long and 80 centimeters in diameter, was installed under the road surface in 1959. The road has become a major access road for local industries, with many heavy vehicles passing.

"Apparently the pipe could not support the load," said Meliana, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

The pipe supplied water from Cisangkuy River to PDAM water treatment facility in Jln. Badaksinga. The broken pipe cut almost half the supply to the facility.

"The pipe is losing 700 liters of water per second. We are now getting only 850 liters per second at Badaksinga," she said.

The spokesperson said repairs, which began Sunday, might take four days to complete. At least 46 areas throughout the Bandung regency are affected by the damage.

"We apologize to the customers," she said.
