West Nusa Tenggara Police foiled the smuggling of 598 bales of used clothes from Singapore, Antara reported on Monday.

The police intercepted the smuggled used clothes while they were being transported in four trucks from Sumbawa in West Nusa Tenggara to Surabaya, East Java.

"Two trucks were stopped at Lembar Harbor, Sumbawa at 11 a.m. local time Sunday when the trucks were lining up at the harbor to board the ferry bound to Surabaya," West Nusa Tenggara Police spokesperson Comr. Tri Budi.

"The other two were nabbed while getting off the ferry in Surabaya at 4 p.m. Sunday," he added.

The police detained the trucks' drivers and confiscated the used clothes.

Police were still looking for the owner, who did not pay the required taxes.

Responding to rumors that the police would drop the case, Tri Budi said, "We will not drop the case and make a settlement. We are now investigating the case. We have the evidence and the suspects." (ast)
