SURABAYA: Drummer of rock band Slank, Bimbim, said he deplored the request made by a group of Malaysian artists to limit the number of Indonesian songs broadcast via radio.
"I do not think it is necessary for them to limit the number of broadcasted Indonesian songs because the public's appreciation of music cannot be limited," he told The Jakarta Post from the sidelines of the band's concert here over the weekend.
The Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications is still weighing the group's request. They had proposed a broadcasting ration of 90 percent Malaysian songs and 10 percent Indonesian.
Bimbim said Malaysian artists dominated the Indonesian music scene back in the 1990s, but neither the government nor the artists protested.
On the other hand, he added, it encouraged Indonesian artists to be more creative.
Despite his concern, he said he was upbeat even it becomes policy, as it would not affect the band's album sales in the neighboring country. JP/Indra Harsaputra
