JAKARTA: Oentarto Sindung Mawardi, former director general for regional autonomy at the Home Affairs Ministry, was questioned Monday at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in a prominent graft case.

The case revolves around the alleged markup in the purchase of fire engines, in which former West Java governor Denny Setiawan is implicated.

Oentarto's lawyer Firman Wijaya said his client was questioned as a witness, but added the questioning was "too much", considering several previous sessions Oentarto had faced.

"I object to this questioning session because my client has been questioned several times and I think he has clearly explained everything," Firman said.

Danny has been named a suspect in the 2003-2004 fire-engine procurement case, believed to have caused Rp 40 billion (US$4.2 million) in state losses. The former governor remains free.

Oentarto has also been declared a suspect for issuing a memo on fire-engine procurement in various regencies in West Java. Firman said his client was only following the orders of then home affairs minister Hari Sabarno. -- JP
