JAKARTA: The Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) is distributing 100,575,000 fund-raising coupons, in hopes of collecting more than Rp 10 billion (US$1.1 million) between Sept. 17, 2008, and Jan. 17, 2009.

"Starting today, we will put forward all our efforts to meet the target," said Rini Sutiyoso, head of the Jakarta branch, at City Hall on Wednesday.

The coupons, worth Rp 1,000 or Rp 500, will be distributed at public places such as malls, theaters and other entertainment spots.

PMI will use the collected funds for their activities in Jakarta including disaster relief aid and blood banks.

Rini said the funds could also be allocated to assist other areas needing humanitarian relief, as PMI has done for earthquake and tsunami relief in Aceh, Bantul in Yogyakarta, Klaten in Central Java and Padang in West Sumatra. --JP
