The House of Representatives Commission V overseeing transportation affairs has agreed to a plan to provide Rp 13 trillion (US$1.4 billion) to state-owned railway operator PT KA to renovate its aging facilities.
"The fund is needed to improve PT KA`s infrastructure and facilities. We will support it in accordance with its master plan. The funds will be provided in installments over a period of several budget years," Ahmad Moquwam, the commission`s chairman, said Saturday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said PT KA currently only had sufficient funding to repair existing machineries rather than buy new ones and prevent future problems.
Commission member Enggartiasto Lukita urged the company to produce a guideline to spend the budget over a 20-year period.
A clear budget, he said, would enable the House to discuss the issue thoroughly, including planning the stages of the allocation to avoid further temporary repairs. (dre)
