Multipurpose cards as education vouchers

TANGERANG: The Tangerang municipality will soon distribute financial assistance for education through scholarships for 33,794 students in the form of "multipurpose cards".

Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim said recently the administration has allocated Rp 6 billion from this year's budget in a bid to provide equal opportunity to community members to access quality education at no cost.

"We hope with the multipurpose card program, that there will be no more children who drop out from school during their school-age, across the municipality," Wahidin said.

Holders of multipurpose cards will obtain a one-year long financial support to pay for their school tuition and other needs from October 2008 to October 2009. The multipurpose cards can be extended for another next year. -JP
