The vehicle theft squad at the city police in cooperation with Batam Police nabbed a man who allegedly stole cars from leasing agencies in the city.
The man, Djong Ju Kwan, 33, alias Aken, was arrested selling one of the stolen cars in Batam, Riau, last month.
"He bought the cars from many leasing agencies in Jakarta and completed them with counterfeit documents. So far, he has sold 12 stolen cars in East Nusa Tenggara, Batam, Riau and Purwakarta, West Java," Comr. M. Irianto said Tuesday.
He said Djong sold the cars at their regular prices and did not try to undersell them.
In a separate investigation, police arrested three people for allegedly selling stolen cars. Police are still looking for the mastermind behind the operations.
Police caught Suryana, Talam and Wastari in Karawang, West Java, and confiscated 19 stolen cars as well as their forged documents.
"They can face up to four years in prison," Irianto said, adding that crime had persisted for a year.
